Lesson 18 Tablets for Textbooks in Schools

Content

Today, books are still the primary medium of instruction in most schools.  It is doubtful if these will totally be replaced by digital technology reading tools, but there are now perceptions that virtual literacy may very well ease out textual print literacy.
Nowadays, technology is being viewed as a savior. Given the fact that students are enamored by computer games which take much of their time at home, educators have begun to think that computer screen can very well serve as a powerful educational medium. Already computer games have been adopted in developed countries as a learning technology along with other audio-visual aids to teaching-learning.
Use of tablets in public schools in the country may be difficult considering certain factors: (a) Cost of one tablet for one student is not within budget capability or beyond capability of government which cannot even fully comply with one book for one student (b) Books have more durability compared with electronic gadgets due to handling, energy charging, heat and moist (c) Technical expertise for the learning software is not widely available.
Conditions in Philippine education show youths in far-flung areas not reached, number of classrooms and facilities, number of classrooms and facilities inadequate, quality of work life of teachers below standards.

Experiences

As I have observed, people don’t use tablets plainly for entertainment purpose. They also store information even books just like what I do sometimes; I save ebooks and even pages that I can read offline. And I also envy how DLSU was able to implement making tablets s their forms of textbook because one would really measure the school’s standards by its facilities.

Reflection
I would really agree if ever they would implement tablets to be used as books in school. It is very handy and it could be updated anytime. The student’s won’t be sick in carrying heavy bags with lots and thick books. Since tablet is on trend, a school won’t be left behind. It is also effective instrument since most of the times, students spend long hours playing with their tablet but when it is used as a textbook, of course students would then mind and encouraged to study their lessons.
Application
This lesson emphasizes on having tablets as substitutes for textbook. Tablets will then be used as storage of information and activities in all topics. The teacher could use software or any computer programs to demonstrate or explain the topic further.
